Relief Society Lesson: Chapter 19 In the World but not of the World
“While we are in the world, we are not of the World. We are expected to overcome the world and to live as becometh saints.”
Request was
given to us to read the lesson, and come each week prepared to discuss the
topic. The link to each lesson is posted
on the Blog. It makes it so easy to study ahead….(sandiegosisters.blogspot.com)
We can live in the world and yet not act as the
world acts…we
can shun vulgar and impure actions. We
can have the light of the Gospel flourish in our family’s lives.
Jesus prayed for the world before he left to
return to Heavenly Father: “I pray not that thou shouldest
take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil”. “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify
them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
(John 17:15-17).
By using the spirit we can keep a perspective on
the amount of time and thinking we spend in our daily lives on the things of
the world. We will be best served to focus on the Gospel and our efforts to
support each other in our common belief in Jesus Christ. Ways we can do that are: keeping the Sabbath,
being kinder to each other, watching our language, choosing wisely the company
we keep.
Keeping the Word of Wisdom helps us make sure we
do not offend God in abusing the temporal body that he has given us. We
discussed the importance of taking care of our body, and keeping our own temple
from blemish. At conference we were admonished to address issues about our
body. If you do not feel comfortable with your body, suggestions were offered
such as losing same pounds, or starting an exercise program, or eating
healthy. Even being modest is a good
reminder for us….we can make our own clothing so we are not of the world. Another
thought that was shared is that through our language, we can be “not of the world”. Even vulgar or crude
words will prevent the spirit attending us.
No matter how we view things, we are always
being watched, and in the end we need to keep strong and share love for not only our families, but our brothers and sisters that are “in the world”. We can help them best if we are grounded in
the Gospel. Follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost.
It is then that we can truly help the work go
forward, and do the will of the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. We are to
bring to the world the glad message of the Gospel.
